What happens if I change my plan mid billing cycle?

Learn how Narrative works out what you pay when you change plans partway through a billing period.

Written by Ashton Smith

If you change your Narrative plan partway through a billing period, you only pay the difference. Narrative takes the unused part of your current plan off the price of your new plan, and shows you exactly what you'll pay before you confirm.

How do I change my plan?

You change your plan in your Narrative account.

  1. Click Change Plan and choose your new plan and how often you want to pay.

  2. Check the payment summary. It shows your credit, the amount due now and your next billing date.

  3. Click Confirm.

Narrative takes care of the rest. If you signed up on the wrong plan, this is all you need to do.

How is the price worked out?

Narrative works out how much of your current plan you haven't used yet, and takes it off the price of your new plan. This is called proration. It's all on one invoice that you pay straight away.

  • Moving to a more expensive plan: you pay the difference.

  • Moving to a cheaper plan: the difference is added to your account as credit and used on your future payments.

Here are some examples. These aren't real prices. For current prices, see narrative.so/pricing.

  • Monthly to annual: you pay 30 USD a month and switch to a 300 USD annual plan halfway through the month. The unused 15 USD comes off, so you pay 285 USD.

  • Annual to monthly: you pay 300 USD a year and switch to monthly halfway through the year. You get 150 USD credit, which is used on your monthly payments until it runs out.

  • Upgrading: you're on a 300 USD annual plan and move to a 600 USD annual plan halfway through the year. The unused 150 USD comes off, so you pay 450 USD.

  • Downgrading: you're on a 300 USD annual plan and move to a 150 USD annual plan halfway through the year. You get 150 USD credit for your unused time, which is used on your future payments.

Will I get money back if I move to a cheaper plan?

Moving to a cheaper plan gives you credit, not a refund to your card. Your credit is used on your future invoices. To learn about refunds, see Billing FAQs.

Will my billing date change?

Your billing date, called your billing anniversary, depends on how you change your plan:

  • In your Narrative account: your billing anniversary stays the same.

  • Through checkout: your billing anniversary resets to the day you change.

The payment summary shows your next billing date before you confirm. Learn more about your billing anniversary.

What if the summary doesn't look right?

If the payment summary isn't what you expected, don't confirm. Contact our support team first.

Changing your Narrative plan doesn't change your Publish subscription, as Publish is a separate app. To pause Publish, see The Publish Parking Plan.
