Train and use a Black & White Personal AI Preset

Train a Black & White Personal AI Preset from your black and white edits, and use it alongside your Color preset.

Written by Ashton Smith

A Black & White Personal AI Preset learns how you edit your black and white photos, so Narrative can edit new photos in your black and white style. It's separate from your Color Personal AI Presets, so you can have both.

How many Black & White AI Presets can I have?

How many you can have depends on your plan:

  • Premium: 1 Color and 1 Black & White Personal AI Preset.

  • Ultra: Up to 5 Color and 5 Black & White Personal AI Presets.

What photos do I need to train it?

To train a Black & White AI Preset, you need at least 1,500 edited and exported photos in Lightroom Classic, the same as for a Color AI Preset. Narrative trains your Black & White AI Preset from the RAW photos you've edited in black and white, and learns best when your edits are consistent.

Narrative needs to reach your photos while it trains, so connect the drives they're on, or make sure your Lightroom Classic catalog has Smart Previews (smaller copies of your photos that Lightroom can use when the originals aren't connected).

If Narrative tells you there are not enough images, edit and export more black and white photos, then try again.

How do I train a Black & White AI Preset?

To train a Black & White AI Preset, follow these steps.

  1. In Narrative, go to your AI Presets and click Train a new AI Preset.

  2. Choose Black & White only. To train a Color and a Black & White preset at the same time, choose Color + Black & White.

  3. Connect the drives with your Lightroom Classic catalogs and photos.

  4. Follow the steps on screen, then click START TRAINING.

  5. Keep Narrative open until your photos finish uploading.

Once your photos have uploaded, training continues online, so you can close Narrative. When your AI Preset is ready, open Narrative to download it.

For the full steps, see Training a Personal AI Preset.

How do I use my Black & White AI Preset?

To use your Black & White AI Preset, choose it when you click Ship + Edit. See Shipping Images with an AI Preset for the steps.

With Lightroom Classic, you can ship your photos with more than one AI Preset, like a Color and a Black & White preset. Each one is added as a Snapshot, so you can switch between them in Lightroom Classic. To learn how, see Batch switch between AI Presets in Lightroom.

Note: Switching to a Snapshot replaces any changes you've made since, so save a Snapshot of your own edits first if you want to keep them.
