Troubleshoot Publish posts on WordPress

Fix a Publish post that isn't showing properly on WordPress, whether you use the plugin or embed code.

Written by Ashton Smith

If your Publish post isn't loading correctly on your WordPress website, first open the live page on your website (not the WordPress editor). Then find what you see below.

There are two ways to publish to WordPress: with the Narrative WordPress plugin (see Install and connect the Narrative WordPress plugin), or by pasting embed code (see Publishing to WordPress with embed code). Some checks below are different for each one.

Why do I see "Your Narrative post will appear here, click to see it live. For any issues click here"?

You may see this message while you're editing in WordPress. If you also see it on the live page, your post isn't loading.

If you pasted embed code

If you pasted embed code, check these steps.

  1. In Publish, check that your post is published.

  2. Click Copy Link to copy the code again. Don't change any of the code.

Copy the complete embed code from Publish.
  3. In the WordPress block editor, paste the code into a Custom HTML block.

Add a Custom HTML block in WordPress.
  4. In the WordPress Classic Editor, paste the code into the Text tab, not the Visual tab.

    Classic Editor: paste into Text.
  5. Click Update in WordPress and open the live page again.

If it still doesn't show, check that your Publish subscription is active. Posts won't load if your subscription has ended or a payment has failed.

If you use the plugin

If you use the plugin, check these:

  • The Narrative Publisher plugin is installed, activated and up to date in WordPress.

  • Publish is connected to the right website.

  • Your post is published in Publish.

  • Your Publish subscription is active.

If all of these look right, your post may no longer be linked to the post on your website. Contact us through the chat bubble or at [email protected] and we'll help you reconnect it.

Why does my post only show one photo, or not show at all?

If your post only shows one photo, or doesn't show at all, the code that loads your post isn't running. This doesn't mean your other photos didn't upload. Check the causes below.

Do I use a speed or caching plugin?

Speed and caching plugins can stop your post from loading. If you use WP Rocket, try turning off Minify JavaScript files.

WP Rocket JavaScript minification setting.

Next, clear your website's cache. In WP Rocket, go to the Dashboard and click Clear cache. Then open the live page again.

If this fixes it, your web developer can set up WP Rocket so it skips your Narrative posts, and you can turn the rest of the setting back on.

Is my website a staging or test website?

Password protection or staging (test) websites can stop your post from loading. Ask your web developer to check your post on your live website.

Do I use Showit?

If your WordPress blog is on Showit, how you publish depends on your Showit plan. See Publishing to Showit for the right steps for your plan.

Why does my post look stretched or have the wrong spacing?

If your post looks different on your website than it does in Publish, your WordPress theme's styles (CSS) may be changing your layout. Every website's CSS is different.

Example of a layout whose spacing differs from the intended design.

Ask your web developer to check your website's CSS. You don't need to change your photos.

What if it still isn't working?

If it still isn't working, contact us through the chat bubble or at [email protected]. Let us know:

  • The link to your live page.

  • Whether you used the plugin or embed code.

  • What you see, and what you've already tried.

Never send us your website password.
