How Publish stores, hosts and retains your images

Learn how Publish hosts copies of your photos, what needs internet, and what happens if you cancel.

Written by Ashton Smith

Publish is a Mac app for building blog posts for your website. When you publish a post, Publish uploads copies of your photos and hosts them online, so your post can show on your website.

What's the difference between my photos and the hosted copies?

Your original photos are the files on your computer or drive. When you publish, Publish uploads copies of them to show in your post online.

The hosted copies aren't a backup, so always keep your original photos and your own backups.

Can I use Publish offline?

You can build your post offline, as long as your photos are on your computer or a connected drive. You need to be online to publish or update your post.

When people visit your website, your post loads from our hosting, so your post needs to stay published to show.

What happens to my posts if I cancel?

If you cancel your Publish subscription, your plan stays active until the end of the period you've paid for. Once your plan is cancelled, you have 30 days to restore your subscription and keep your posts live. After that, your posts stop being hosted, so they won't show on your website. This is separate from your Narrative subscription.

Before you cancel, see What happens when I cancel Publish? If you have questions, contact us through the chat bubble or at [email protected].

To keep your posts online without a full plan, you can switch to the Publish Parking Plan.

Can I keep my posts on my website without Publish?

To keep your posts on your website without Publish hosting, export them as JPGs before you cancel, and upload the JPGs to your website yourself. Exporting needs a yearly Publish plan. Exported JPGs are still images, so features like Lightbox won't work.

Copying your post's embed code doesn't move your photos to your website. The code still loads your photos from our hosting.

Can I restore a deleted post?

If you deleted a post, contact us as soon as you can. We may be able to restore it, but we can't promise. You may need your original photos to publish it again. See Can I Restore a Deleted Blog Post?
