Using filters in Narrative

Open Narrative's filters, choose which ones show, and filter by ratings, First Pass, focus and more, or hide one rating.

Written by Ashton Smith

Filters let you show only the photos you want to see, like your one-star photos, or everything except your rejects. Filters only change which photos you see. They don't change your ratings.

How do I open filters?

To open filters in Narrative, click the filter icon in the toolbar. Click it again to close them.

By default, you'll see the AI First Pass and Image Focus scores filters. On Mac, you'll see the People filter too. It isn't on Windows yet, but Windows support is on the way. The Star ratings, Color ratings and Tags filters show up once you've used them in a project.

The AI First Pass and Image Focus scores filters are part of Advanced AI Culling, on Standard, Premium and Ultra plans.

How do I add or remove filters?

To choose which filters show, click the three-dot Manage filters button at the end of the filters, then check or uncheck a filter type. You can choose from:

  • AI First Pass

  • People (Mac only)

  • Image Focus scores

  • Star ratings

  • Color ratings

  • Tags

  • Camera/Serial

  • Capture Date

  • Lens

  • Folder

Camera/Serial, Capture Date and Lens are grayed out when every photo in the project has the same one. Folder is grayed out when the project's folder has no subfolders.

With every filter turned on, the toolbar looks like this:

How do I filter by a rating?

To filter by a rating, click it in the filters. Narrative shows only the photos with that rating. The small number under each rating shows how many photos have it.

You can also press ⌘ 1–9 or ⌘ P on Mac, or Ctrl 1–9 or Ctrl P on Windows, to turn a rating filter on or off. To show all your photos again, click Clear.

How do I hide photos with one rating?

To show every photo except those with one rating, hold ⌘ on Mac or Ctrl on Windows and click that rating. Narrative selects every other option in that filter for you. For example, ⌘-click the red label to hide your red-labeled photos. Do it again to clear the filter.

Can I filter by eyes closed or eyes open?

Not yet. There isn't a filter for eyes closed or eyes open. To spot blinks, check the Eye and Focus Assessment icons under each face, or look through the Close-ups panel. If you'd like an eye filter, let our support team know and we'll add your vote to the feature request.

To learn more about filtering by focus, see our focus score filter article.
