Send images from Narrative to Capture One

Ship your photos and ratings from Narrative to Capture One on a Mac, or import them by hand on Windows.

Written by Ashton Smith

You can ship your selected photos from Narrative straight to Capture One on a Mac. On Windows, you copy them to a folder and import them into Capture One yourself.

Your star ratings and color labels go to Capture One in your photos' XMP files (small sidecar files next to your photos). Capture One doesn't read Narrative's tags or rejects, and you can't apply an AI Preset when you ship to Capture One.

How do I ship my photos to Capture One on a Mac?

Once you've finished culling, follow these steps:

  1. Click Ship + Edit in the top-right corner.

  2. Choose Capture One from the list.

  3. Choose which photos to ship. For example, choose 5 stars to ship your 5-star photos. Then click the ship button.

  4. If your Mac asks whether Narrative can control Capture One, click OK. Narrative needs this to ship straight to Capture One.

  5. Capture One opens with your photos and their ratings.

How do I get my photos into Capture One on Windows?

On Windows, you can't ship straight to Capture One, so you copy your photos to a folder first.

  1. Filter to the photos you want in Narrative, then press Ctrl+A to select them all.

  2. Go to File → Copy Files... and choose a folder.

  3. In Capture One, import that folder. Keep your photos and their XMP files together.

You can also drag your selected photos onto Capture One to import them. Check which photos Capture One is importing before you continue.

What if Narrative can't control Capture One?

If you see a message saying Narrative doesn't have permission to control Capture One, turn it on in your Mac's settings.

  1. Open System Settings on your Mac (called System Preferences on older versions of macOS).

  2. Click Privacy & Security, then Automation.

  3. Under Narrative Select + Edit, turn on Capture One.

  4. Go back to Narrative and ship your photos again.

Capture One should now open with your shipped photos.

What if my ratings don't show in Capture One?

If your ratings don't show, check the XMP files are in the same folder as your photos. Then in Capture One, select the photos and go to Image → Load Metadata.

Important: Loading metadata can replace information you've already added in Capture One. Try it on one photo first.
