How do I apply a new AI Preset to images already in Lightroom Classic?

Switch to another AI Preset with Snapshots, or apply a new AI Preset to photos already in Lightroom Classic.

Written by Ashton Smith

If you've already shipped photos to Lightroom Classic and want a different AI Preset on them, first check whether you already have it as a Snapshot. If you don't, you can apply a new AI Preset from Narrative and read it into Lightroom.

Important: Switching Snapshots and reading metadata both replace any edits you've made since shipping. Save any edit you want to keep first, for example as a Snapshot or a virtual copy.

How do I switch to an AI Preset I already shipped with?

If you shipped with more than one AI Preset, each one is a Snapshot in Lightroom Classic.

  1. Open the photo in the Develop module in Lightroom Classic.

  2. Open the Snapshots panel and click the AI Preset you want.

  3. To use that Snapshot on several photos, select them and choose File → Plug-in Extras → Sync Snapshots.

Sync Snapshots applies the same look to every photo you've selected, replacing their current edits.

How do I apply a new AI Preset?

To apply an AI Preset you didn't ship with, apply it from Narrative without opening Lightroom, then read it into Lightroom Classic.

  1. Open the project in Narrative and click Ship + Edit.

  2. Choose the photos and an AI Preset you have access to.

  3. Turn off Open in editing program, and keep Apply AI Preset for Lightroom on.

  4. Click Pre-edit [number] Images and wait for it to finish. Narrative saves the new edits in your photos' XMP files (small sidecar files next to your photos).

  5. In Lightroom Classic, select the same photos.

  6. Right-click and choose Metadata → Read Metadata from File.

Lightroom replaces the photos' current edits with the new AI Preset.

Try this on one photo first, and check the new look and your ratings are right before you do the rest.

Can I ship the same photos again?

You can't ship the same photos into a Lightroom Classic catalog they're already in. Narrative skips photos that are already there, and if all of them are, you can't ship them. Use one of the options above instead.

Do I need to remove the photos from Lightroom first?

You don't need to remove your photos from Lightroom. Switching Snapshots or reading metadata, as above, keeps your catalog as it is. Removing photos can also lose how you've organized them.

If you want to compare AI Presets away from your main catalog, you can ship to a separate test catalog instead. Learn how to create a new catalog when you ship.
