Use Scenes and rank ordering in Narrative

Open Scenes, review each Scene with Scene rank, move around with the keyboard and change the sort order of new projects.

Written by Ashton Smith

Scenes group similar photos together so you can compare them side by side and pick the best of each moment. With Scene rank, the strongest photos in each Scene show first. You decide which photos to keep.

Scenes are part of Advanced AI Culling, on Standard, Premium and Ultra plans.

How do I open Scenes?

To open Scenes, create or open a project and let Narrative finish processing it. Then press S, or click the Scenes icon in the toolbar.

Scenes view showing similar photos grouped into Scenes.

How do I review a Scene?

  1. Choose Scene rank as the sort order.

  2. Look at the top-ranked photo, including the whole composition.

  3. Check the face and focus indicators, or open Close-ups.

  4. Compare it with the other photos in the Scene.

  5. Rate the photos you want to keep.

  6. Move to the next Scene.

You can keep several photos from a Scene, choose a lower-ranked one, or keep none. A sharp photo isn't always the moment you want.

What are the keyboard shortcuts for Scenes?

These are the default keys for moving around Scenes:

Action

Default shortcut

Previous / next photo

↑ / ↓

Previous / next Scene

← / →

Move through the photos in a Scene on Mac

⌘ ↑ / ↓

Move through the photos in a Scene on Windows

Ctrl + ↑ / ↓

You can change these keys in Preferences. If your keys work differently, check your shortcut settings.

To select every photo in a Scene, hold ⌘ Shift and click a thumbnail on Mac, or Ctrl Shift and click on Windows. Selecting photos doesn't rate them.

How do I change the sort order?

You can sort by Scene rank, Capture time or File name. You can also turn on Capture time (reverse) under Sort Options.

To set the default sort order for new projects, go to Preferences → Import. Scene Rank is the default.

Changing the sort order doesn't rate, reject or delete any photos.

What does Scene rank mean?

Scene rank uses First Pass assessments to show you the strongest photos in each Scene first. It compares photos within a Scene, not across your whole shoot, and it isn't a verdict on your photo.

See AI First Pass Image Assessments for what each category means, and Use ratings to select your images to save your choices.
