Customize your Keyboard Shortcuts

Change any keyboard shortcut in Narrative's Preferences, choose your arrow and rating keys, and restore the defaults.

Written by Ashton Smith

You can change Narrative's keyboard shortcuts to suit the way you work. They're all in the Keyboard Shortcuts tab in Preferences.

How do I open the keyboard shortcut settings?

  1. Open Preferences. Click the profile icon in the top-right corner of Narrative and choose Preferences, or press ⌘, on Mac or Ctrl+, on Windows. On Mac, you can also go to Narrative Select + Edit → Preferences in the menu bar.

  2. Click Keyboard Shortcuts on the left.

How do I change a keyboard shortcut?

  1. In the Keyboard Shortcuts tab, scroll down to Shortcut Preferences to see every shortcut you can change.

  2. Hover over the shortcut you want to change and click the pencil icon.

  3. Press the key, or combination of keys, you want to use.

  4. Click Save. To keep the old shortcut, click Cancel instead.

If the keys you pick are already used by another shortcut, Narrative swaps them, so the other shortcut gets the keys you just replaced.

Tip💡 You can use a combination of several keys for one shortcut.

What else can I change in Keyboard Shortcuts?

At the top of the Keyboard Shortcuts tab, you can also choose:

  • Navigation: which arrow keys move between photos and which move between Scenes.

  • Rating: whether you rate with the number keys on their own (1–5 for stars, and 6, 7, 8, 9 and P for color labels), or with a modifier key. With a modifier key, it's Ctrl + 1–5 for stars and 1–5 for color labels on Mac, or Alt + 1–5 for stars and Ctrl + 1–5 for color labels on Windows.

To see every shortcut, click View all keyboard shortcuts, or see Narrative keyboard shortcuts.

How do I reset my keyboard shortcuts?

To put your shortcuts back to how they started, click Restore defaults next to Shortcut Preferences. Every shortcut you changed goes back to its default keys.
