What is a WordPress category?

Learn what WordPress categories are, and how to choose one for your Publish post when you publish with the WordPress plugin.

Written by Ashton Smith

A WordPress category is a way to sort your blog posts into sections, so visitors can find the posts they're looking for. For example, you might sort your posts into Weddings, Engagements and Travel. A new WordPress website has one category to start with, called Uncategorized.

How do I choose a category for my Publish post?

When you publish with the Narrative WordPress plugin, you can choose which of your WordPress categories your post goes into. Each time you make a post, choose a category from the category dropdown below your website URL in Publish.

Your categories come from WordPress, so add or change them in your WordPress dashboard.

When you first connect the plugin, Publish asks you to choose a Default Category. You can still change the category for each post in the dropdown before you publish it.

What does the Publish via Code option do?

The category dropdown also has a Publish via Code option. Choose it when you want to copy your post's embed code instead of sending the post to WordPress, for example to add your post to a page or to another website. See Publishing to WordPress with embed code.
