An image description in Publish describes a photo for someone who can't see it. Publish uses it as the photo's alt text (the text that describes it to search engines and screen readers) and its title.
Clear descriptions help people and search engines understand your photos, but they can't guarantee where your post shows in search results.
What should I write in an image description?
Describe who's in the photo, what's happening and where, in a natural sentence. Write a different description for each photo.
For example, "A couple walking through the New York Botanical Garden" tells people much more than "New York wedding photographer".
Only include names, places and details you know are right, and avoid repeating keywords.
Tip: Try reading your description to someone with their eyes closed. If they can picture the photo, you're on the right track.
How do I add an image description?
To add an image description, follow these steps.
Click a photo in your post. The Selected Image tab opens in the panel on the right.
Type your description in SEO Image Description.
Press Tab to move to the next photo, then type its description.
When you're done, press Command + S to save your post.
Your descriptions are added to your post when you click Publish or Update. To find any photos you haven't described yet, see Find Missing Descriptions with the Image Descriptions Overlay.
Why can't I see my descriptions on my website?
Image descriptions don't show as captions under your photos. They're added to the page's code, where search engines and screen readers can read them.
If you think a description is missing, press Command + S to save your post, then click Update. If you need help checking, contact us through the chat bubble or at [email protected].
Note: If you export your post as JPGs, your descriptions aren't included. Add them on your website yourself. Your page title and meta description are also separate, so fill those in too.
