Get started with Pre-Edit (Beta)

Learn how Pre-Edit (beta) lets you apply AI Presets to your photos while you cull, and how to request access.

Written by Ashton Smith

Pre-Edit lets you apply an AI Preset to your photos before you cull, so you rate and choose edited photos instead of straight-off-camera ones. You stay in control of which photos you keep.

Pre-Edit is in beta. To request access, chat with us using the chat bubble or email [email protected]. If you don't have it yet, you can still edit your photos when you ship with Ship + Edit.

Why use Pre-Edit?

With Pre-Edit, you see what each photo will look like once it's edited while you cull. That helps with borderline photos. For example, is that shot too dark to use, or does it hold up once it's corrected? You also get a head start on editing once you ship to Lightroom.

Where do I find Pre-Edit?

To find Pre-Edit, open a project and click the Pre-edit Panel button on the right (it has a Beta badge), or press Shift+P.

In the panel, you can browse your Personal, Core and Artist AI Presets. Hover over one to preview it on the photo you're looking at. Hovering only previews the look. It doesn't apply it, and previewing an Artist AI Preset doesn't buy it.

How do I apply an AI Preset with Pre-Edit?

To apply an AI Preset, add it to your list, then apply it to your photos.

  1. Drag an AI Preset into your Applied AI Presets list, or hover over it and click +. You can add more than one, so you're not locked into one look.

  2. To apply one to the whole project, choose it and click Apply To All.

  3. To apply one to a group of photos, click a photo, hold Shift and click the others, then click Apply To Selected.

  4. Check your photos, and change the AI Preset on any photo where you'd like a different look.

There's no set time for the previews to load, so let them finish before you check your photos.

What are the Pre-Edit shortcuts?

These shortcuts help you move quickly with Pre-Edit:

  • Shift+P: open the Pre-Edit panel.

  • B: move to the next AI Preset in your Applied AI Presets list.

  • Shift+B: move to the previous AI Preset.

  • Tap \: switch to No Preset, or back again.

  • Hold \: see the photo without the AI Preset until you let go.

What happens when I ship?

When you ship, each photo goes to Lightroom with the AI Preset you chose for it in Pre-Edit. With Lightroom Classic, the other AI Presets in your list are also there as Snapshots, so you can compare them. Learn how to ship with an AI Preset.

Important: Switching to another Snapshot in Lightroom replaces the photo's current edit, including changes you've made since shipping. Save any edit you want to keep first.

Which AI Preset does my next project start with?

When you start a new project, Narrative applies the AI Preset you applied most in your last project. It doesn't use the one you last hovered over.

How do I give feedback on Pre-Edit?

Pre-Edit is in beta, so how it works may change. We'd love to hear what you think. Chat with us using the chat bubble or email [email protected].
