What happens to my images and data with Narrative?

Understand local photo processing, optional image uploads, Personal AI Preset data and where to find Narrative's privacy policy.

Written by Ashton Smith

Your photos are yours. Here's what happens to them, and to your data, when you use Narrative.

Where do my photos go?

Your photos stay where they already are. Narrative works with your originals in their folder, and culling and AI assessments happen on your computer.

If you import from a memory card, Narrative copies your photos to the folders you choose. That's a copy on your own drives, not an upload.

Where are my ratings and edits saved?

For RAW photos, they're saved in small XMP sidecar files next to each photo. Keep those files with your photos when you move or back up a shoot, or your ratings won't come with them. Learn about XMP sidecar files.

Is anything uploaded?

Only if you use a feature that needs it:

  • Help improve Narrative: optional, and off unless you turn it on. You can change it any time in Preferences → General.

  • Personal AI Presets: training uploads your edited images and edit data. They're private to you, and other Narrative users can't see or use them.

What about my account and app data?

Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your personal information and app usage data.
