Update Narrative and see what’s new

Learn how Narrative updates itself, how to check for an update, and where to see what's new in each version.

Written by Ashton Smith

Narrative updates itself automatically. It checks for updates while you're using it and when you open it, and downloads them in the background.

What happens when an update is ready?

When an update has downloaded, you'll see a message that says A new version of Narrative is available. Click Restart Now to finish updating. If you don't, Narrative restarts by itself when the countdown in the message ends.

You don't need to save anything first. Narrative saves your work as you go and remembers where you were. If you're copying or moving photos, let that finish before you restart.

How do I check for an update?

You can check for an update yourself at any time.

  1. On Mac, click Narrative Select + Edit in the menu bar. On Windows, open the App menu.

  2. Click Check for Updates.

If there's an update, Narrative downloads it and asks you to restart.

How do I see what's new?

To see what's changed in the latest version, go to Help → What's New.

Some new features need a certain plan or a newer operating system, so you might not see everything listed straight away.

How do I download Narrative again?

If you need to install Narrative again, download the latest version from the Narrative download page. Learn how to download and install Narrative.

What if an update won't finish?

If you see Failed to update Narrative, try these steps:

  1. Check you're connected to the internet.

  2. Check you have free space on your computer's drive.

  3. Quit and reopen Narrative, then check for updates again.

If it still won't update, contact us through the chat bubble or at [email protected]. Tell us your Narrative version, your operating system and the message you see.

On a Mac with macOS 11 or earlier, Narrative can't update. Update to macOS 12 or later to get new versions. Learn how to upgrade your macOS version.
