Select is running slowly

Select has higher memory requirements in order to run smoothly due to its architecture compared to other more traditional applications which means it can be a little slower on older macs. We’re working on improvements and optimisations in this area which may help, and in the meantime, here are some things you can do to make Select run faster:

  • Close other apps and browser tabs.

It's possible the slowdown you are experiencing with Select is partly down to a lack of available RAM on your computer. Typically applications like Lightroom, Photoshop and Chrome (particularly if you have many tabs open) take up a lot of RAM, so closing them is a good place to start. To see what else is running and taking up RAM, open up your Activity Monitor (Press Cmd+spacebar and type ‘Activity Monitor’).

  • Work from files stored directly on your computer or SSD.

Another possibility is where your images are stored. If your source folder is on an external hard drive (particularly an older mechanical hard drive) you may experience the app running slowly, particularly when importing new projects. Try working from your desktop or an SSD to see if that helps.

  • Regularly clear out older projects.

Clearing your database to remove old projects you no longer need is a surefire way to speed things up. In the menu bar click Help > Troubleshooting > Clear Database. This will clear out your projects, but it won't delete any metadata. You'll just need to reimport the current project you're working on afterwards.

  • Give Select a few minutes to process after importing a new project.

Select does a lot of work up front to give you AI assessments and scenes. We are definitely working on making this more efficient, but in the meantime you may find that Select runs a lot faster after all of this initial processing is finished. Depending on the size of the project and your machine, it could take between a few seconds and a few dozen minutes to finish. So if you can spare the time, go and make a cup of tea come back later :)

The whole app is unresponsive/not working (e.g. ERR105 or 'Oops something went wrong')

  • Restart Select: Close the app by right-clicking the dock icon and selecting 'Quit.' Then, reopen the app.

  • Restart Your Computer: If the issue persists, restart your computer and try reopening Select.

  • Clear the Database: In the menu bar, click Help > Troubleshooting > Clear Database. (Caution: This won’t delete any metadata, but it will clear your projects.)

  • Delete App Cache: If still unresolved, go to Help > Troubleshooting > Delete App Cache, then reopen Narrative and sign in. Update your preferences as needed.

  • Change Storage Device: If you continue to receive ERR105, the issue might be related to using an SD or memory card. Please try transferring your source folder to an HDD or SSD and then import it into Narrative.

  • Contact Support: Still stuck? Contact support - We may be experiencing a temporary issue. We’ll help you get back up to speed in no time.
