If faces, eye assessments or focus scores are missing in Narrative, it's usually because a setting is hiding them or Narrative is still scanning your photos. Start with the checks below.
How do I check assessments are turned on?
First, check assessments are turned on and set to show.
Click the eye icon in the toolbar to turn on assessments. When they're on, the icon has a black dot below it.
Check you're not in zoom mode. When you're not in zoom mode, the zoom icons have no black dot below them.
Go to Preferences. Under Eye and Focus Assessment display, set Main Image to Eye and Focus and Close-ups Panel to Eye and Focus (Detailed).
By default, assessments don't show in zoom mode. To see them there too, turn on Show icons in Zoom Mode in Preferences.
Note: The Close-ups panel isn't on the Lite plan, so you won't see faces there. It's on Standard, Premium and Ultra plans. Compare Narrative plans.
Is Narrative still scanning my photos?
If you see a spinning face icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen, Narrative is still scanning your photos for faces. Faces and assessments appear as it finishes each photo.
How long scanning takes depends on the size of your project and your computer. To keep it moving:
Keep the drive or folder with your photos connected.
When you first install Narrative, let it finish downloading what it needs before you start.
If you have time, let scanning finish before you start culling.
Why doesn't Narrative assess some faces?
Narrative doesn't assess every face. It skips faces in the background on purpose, so the assessments focus on the people who matter in the photo.
Narrative can also miss a face that's small, partly hidden, at an unusual angle or in difficult light. If Narrative misses a face you'd expect it to find, send us the photo through the chat bubble or at [email protected] so we can improve it.
If Narrative doesn't find a face in a photo, the photo won't have a face focus score. A missing score doesn't mean the photo is out of focus.
What if most faces are still missing?
If scanning has finished but most faces are still missing, try these steps in order:
Update Narrative to the latest version. Learn how Narrative updates.
Go to File → Refresh Source Folder. Narrative imports your photos again and scans them for faces.
If scanning still doesn't finish, go to Help → Troubleshooting → Restart App.
If faces are still missing, clear the database. Read what it does first (see below).
Contact us through the chat bubble or at [email protected]. Tell us your Narrative version, your operating system and a photo where faces are missing. If we ask for your logs, go to Help → Troubleshooting → Send Logs to Support.
What happens if I clear the database?
Before you clear the database:
All your projects are removed from Narrative. You'll need to import the shoots you're working on again.
Names you've given people in People Filter are lost.
Narrative works out Scenes, faces and AI assessments again when you reimport, which can take a while on big shoots.
Your photos and XMP files aren't deleted, and your ratings, color labels, tags and crops come back when you import your shoots again.
To clear the database:
Go to Help → Troubleshooting → Clear Database.
Click Clear database to confirm.
Import the shoots you're working on again, and let scanning finish.
