Shoot Type Detection recognizes the type of photography in a new project, like a wedding or a sports game, and sets the project's shoot type for you. Narrative uses the shoot type to tailor your culling, for example by turning on Key People Highlighting for weddings and events.

Shoot Type Detection works on every Narrative plan, on Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later. It isn't on Windows yet, but Windows support is on the way.

It works on new projects only. Narrative doesn't go back and set a shoot type for existing projects, but you can set one yourself.

To see the shoot type Narrative detected, let your new project finish analyzing, then open the Shot Info panel. Press I, or click the info icon on the right side of Narrative. The shoot type shows in the Shoot Type field.

If you reject the suggested shoot type, Narrative sets it to Other.

The shoot type decides whether Key People Highlighting is on by default. It turns on automatically for Wedding and Event projects. You can still turn Key People Highlighting on or off for any project in People Filter. Learn about Key People Highlighting.
