.DNG or .ARW files look blurry or pixelated

Narrative does support .DNG and .ARW files, however, it currently relies on the file's embedded JPG preview to display your image. If that preview JPG is very small, you'll see the image as pixellated/blurry and our face assessments may not work very well.

If your camera shoots .ARW files (Sony)

Sony RAW files inherently have a very small embedded preview. This means that Narrative and other software are only able to show you a low-resolution preview of your image.

We suggest that when you shoot with a Sony camera, make sure you are shooting on the RAW+JPG setting, with the size set to Large/Fine. When you take a shot, your camera will create a .ARW file and a .JPG file with the same name. When you import into Narrative we will actually show you the .JPG file (which is high resolution) so you can zoom in and see full detail. When you rate the image we will create an .XMP sidecar file to store your rating so that when you ship into Lightroom to edit your .ARW file will also have your rating associated to it.

If you don't want to shoot RAW+JPG, or you want to review a shoot where you did not have this setting switched on, you can still see high res images in Narrative. To do this, convert your .ARW files into .DNG files with high resolution embedded preview using Adobe Lightroom or another program. You can now import them into Narrative.

If your camera shoots .DNG files

Some cameras will allow you to change the embedded JPG preview size. If so, set this to Full Size/High Quality.

If you can't change this setting and you still want to use Narrative, you can import them into Lightroom first, then export them with the settings described below.

If you are exporting .DNG files from Lightroom

If you are exporting your RAWs from Lightroom as .DNG files, make sure the JPEG preview is set to 'Full Size' in your export settings.

Eventually, we will have a comprehensive solution for this issue – so hold tight if you are unable to get this working.
